My bet is he's using Maildir as mbox_type. So the maildirs are
recognized as a mailbox and flagged if the contain new messages.
So: No, you don't get the N flag for subdirectories, only for the
mailboxes (be it maildirs which are themselves folders or mbox
files) /inside/ the subdirectories.
