Which type of mailbox to use?

I'm getting to eliminate PMMail (a Windows based email client) and use Mutt as
my main email program
under Linux Slackware 9.1.

I'm on about 60 mailing lists and have over 150 folders where email is stored.
Some of the folders have in excess of 10,000. messages stored in maildir format.

I had planned to use maildir format with Mutt but have found out it's quite
different from what I'm used to.
First, each maildir has at least three subdirs (cur, new, and tmp).
Secondly it is not clear how I would implement subdirectories that are also
maildir folders, and sub-sub directories etc.

I'm thinking of using the old mbox format even though there are problems with
speed and locking.

My present mail folder setup with PMMail is as follows:

mail
    email account1
          inbox
          outbox
          personal mail
               ham radio
                    mailist 1
                           save
                     mailist 2
                            save
                      maillist 3
                linux
                       mailist 4
                              save
                        mailist 5
                              save
          email account2

etc, etc

As you can see, each account is it's separate directory tree with major
subdirectories under that.
The mailing list subdirectories under each section (ham, linux etc) each have
the various mailing lists on that subject
and each mailing list has at the very least a save directory under that so that
messages I want to keep can
be moved there.

I don't see how I could have this kind of structure under maildir.
As maiildir is my preferred structure, does anyone know how that could work?

Would mbox format work better?

I'm also considering mh but I don't know much about that.
>From what I've read so far I don't think it will do what I want.

Hoping to get some ideas from this group.
Thank you very much,
