Every time I've seen such discrepency, it turned out to be a locale
problem. But yours seems OK... Hum... What gives "locale charmap"? What
gives "locale --all-locales | grep -i en_US.UTF-8"? Or... Do you happen
to have an alias file? Is it written in UTF-8?

Should be an ã (a tilde) somewhere, but it was lost in copy/paste.
Here the solution will probably be $assumed_charset=iso-8859-1

Which one? I count 3 probs: Alignment, index "space" char, and the
pager \343.
