Many cheap ISPs in Britain require that the SMTP sender address always
be the email address issued by the ISP; people who have their own domain
will need to use a split Envelope/Header set-up. This seems to be what
the OP faced.
This is fairly common in a number of countries.
People having their own domain may not be common for the populace as a
whole, but there's a reasonable chance that a home user who chooses mutt
will have their own domain.
Hence the feature is useful for many more people than you believe that
it's useful for.
