I am in exactly the same position. I have looked at a lot of fonts
but have not been happy with any of them yet. My favorite font is the
classic old 9x15 font. Of course that has no UTF-8 support. The best
fonts I have found so far are these two:

  -misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1
  -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--18-120-100-100-c-90-iso10646-1

The first is usually the default uxterm font. The second is usually
font5 the large font. I am using the larger font right now as my
normal xterm font. It is not as nice as the older 9x15 to me. But it
is the best I have found so far on a 1600x1200 display. I think
people with 800x600 or 1024x768 laptop displays will find the smaller
font quite good.

These efonts also seem pretty good.
