Picking up on what Charles posted, FWIW I use:

* getmail to pop mail from my ISP
* Bincimap for the imap server
* qmailpop3d for certain MS users who want mail 'popped' from my linux
server.
* postfix for outgoing mail.

I have just implemented items 2 and 3, and it works a treat. The first 3
are designed to work with maildirs........no more mbox mail spool files.
