Unless you have changed it, the default action of "u" is to undelete
present message and "U" to undelete by *pattern*.  If you want to
change that *default* action, you need to bind the keys to do what you
want/expect.  The procedure is explained in TFM as are the default key
actions.

A cursory examination of TFM will yeald a wealth of knowledge, perhaps
even explaining an apporach to your problem.
