Not necessarily.  I think it *was* the firewall that I was behind that
prevented ssh working without disabling X11.  As I said later in the
thread I am now running ssh in exactly the same was as before on the
same Solaris box but behind a different firewall and find I now don't
need to disable X.

However as I also said I don't really see much to be gained from
using X in this particular case (even if the remote system had any
X applications).
