I have a working install of v.1.5.5.1 on Debian Sarge.
Unfortunately, I have had to change some of the default

Most I found straightforward and obvious, but I've not been
able to alter the top and bottom 'bars' ( those which say 'm mail'
's save' 'r reply' and so on) - how can these be altered?.

Those are parts of the 'status' object, so you can color them like
this:

   color status blue white

Thank you, Gary. I was certain that I had 'played around' with all the colour settings to see what was what. Clearly I hadn't. Using 'blue on white' enables me to see, however, I do get the same problem I found with other settings. 'White' gives me a 'dirty' greyish
colour whilst 'default' gives a white background.

Grateful for your help. John.
