I know people who started out with Unix by obtaining a sparcstation or
similar from ebay (or computer fair, etc.) and toying with it,
precisely to learn how to be a system administrator (funny the kind of
people you meet when you're a system administrator)...  If they had
seen this behavior when starting to use Mutt, they would have
dismissed Mutt out of hand as being a brain-dead mail client.  And
they would be right to do so.

I'm not saying Mutt is brain dead, but this "feature" certainly makes
it look that way.
