We must have something different in our configuration then. It works fine for
me
with the CVS head and the following macro:
macro index <ESC>1 '<limit>~r<3d<enter>' "View messages from last 3 days
When use alt-1 to execute that limit, and then hit 'l', it preloads ~r<3d.
