I haven't personally used the virtual mailbox concept much, but I think
the big problem with this approach is that it doesn't allow you to
create virtual folders comprised of messages from different folders,
which somewhat limits its utility.

Using mairix might work; the big limitation of that is that the
"virtual" folders take up actual space.
