Sounds like it's something that's different between the RC files.

Yuck. Hm. Did you compile mutt with debugging symbols? It looks like 
you probably didn't. In your mutt source directory, run this:

     make clean && make CFLAGS="-O0 -g" && sudo make install

And then retry running mutt inside the debugger.
