    Better suited:

 - TERM=xterm (and variants) for Xterm.
 - TERM=putty (or -256color) for PuTTY.

    Using a given TERM with a different terminal is rarely a good idea.
And if you believe in alleged compatibility, I've got a bridge to sell
you. ;-)
