Try $wrap_margin - it's dependent on your current terminal size, so if
you often use lots of different terminal sizes, this won't help.

Good thought. You could try setting your display_filter to be
fmt -w 80
(fmt is a standard Unix utility... may not be available on things like
cygwin.)
