Yes as the manual indicates these variables are set by default.

But I don't see how these two booleans could help me set the textwidth
at 80 columns.

The only thing I found in the manual that might help is $display_filter.

I tried t-prot which does some rather useful things but it doesn't seem
to support this particular feature.

Any suggestions..?
