Muttng and mutt likely do not use the same version of the hcache
patch. For example, over the last six months, mutt has changed how it
uses hcache (in incompatible ways) several times. So what's happening
is muttng created the cache files and can use them just fine, while
mutt attempts to use the cache files, notes that they are not the
correct version, and quietly ignores them. Delete the contents of that
folder and try using mutt again (without running muttng first), and
see if that doesn't work.
