slow to open mutt/ delete mails

I am using mutt 1.5.9i on a P-IV 3.2GHz 512 RAM/ 4700RPM HDD laptop
with OS OpenBSD3.8. I am subscribed to lots of lists and I filter my
mails in specific mailboxes through procmail. Right now I have around
14,000 mails in mutt.
My mutt is in mbox format and it takes time to open up my mailboxes.
It also takes a lot of time for mutt to sync the mailbox after I
delete some mails.
Is there any way I can make mutt run a little bit faster without
converting to maildir format?
