If I recall correctly, the one in Fink is using the "LOCALES_HACK", 
isn't it? That might be futzing with you.

Maybe. Let's hope the Fink unstable package is up to snuff (though I'm 
not holding my breath).

Linking against the right ncurses library will help; just changing 
versions (i.e. using mutt 1.5.x) shouldn't affect the problem.

There are five pieces to getting it to work: the font, the terminal, 
the terminal library, the program, and finally the environment 
variables to tell it all that it can use the fancy characters. It 
sounds like you're just missing a good terminal library.

I gotta admit, though, I am rather curious why fink linked mutt 
against TWO ncurses libraries. I would think it would get confused.
