mutt has some built-in support for retrieving mail from external POP (and
IMAP) mailhosts, but many people (including me) prefer to use an external mail
retriever that is more fully-featured.

You most definitely do not need an MTA (exim, sendmail, qmail, etc) to use
mutt to /read/ mail. A mail retriever (like getmail, or (ugh) fetchmail) is
easy to add.

You'll need some way to get mutt to send mail out; if you want to relay
through your ISP's mailhost, something like ssmtp is easy to set up.
