Maybe. Why do you have a 2GB mailbox?

Yes. Another useful tip: store no-longer-active mail in an
archive. And another: split mail from mailing lists into
separate mailboxes. And another: strip large attachments
and put them in a separate hierarchy.

2.6 with ext3 should have no problem with large files in and of
itself.
