Hello,
we thought a little bit about the problem in the irc.debian.org/#mutt
channel and came to the conclusion that the best method to what you want
to is the following:
set editor=/path/to/program/or/scripts which modifies the message (like formail)
call edit
set editor=vim or whatever your prefer.
