But the status flags occupy only 3 columns, and the column used by
the L is shared with the other "to" flags.  So setting the L flag to
a space is not really wasting a column.  If you really need that
extra column and you don't want to see any of the "to" flags, you
could either set to_chars to "      " and remove the space in
index_format following the "%Z", or replace the "%Z" with "%S" in
the index_format.
