  could you please:

    1. send the output of "locale".
    2. send the output of "grep enc ~/.vimrc"
    3. reply to such a letter and (you should then be seeing the
       two-letter combinations you talk about) do ":w /tmp/foo".
       Then, send /tmp/foo *gzipped*.

  basically, what is happening is that vim thinks the text is in
  iso-8859 when it is in fact in utf-8.
