Mutt uses the 'alternates' setting to figure-out your various email
addresses.

The default index shows the number of lines in each message, IMAP
servers don't provide this info when you open a mailbox.
You can change the 'index_format' so that mutt shows sizes instead.

It does if you leave it long enough.
If you want to force a check for new IMAP mail, 'sync-mailbox'
(bound to $ by default) updates the server and synchronises it with
mutt's view of the folder. It doesn't do anything unless you have
local changes to synchronise - This is arguably a bug.
