I think the double backslashes were your problem (maybe an sgmltools
bug/gotcha) - I use single slashes and no quotes and that works fine.

I sometimes use this notation instead:

alias the list The List: First Name <first@xxxxxxxxxx>, \
                Second Name <second@xxxxxxxxxx>;

which also works fine.
