A colleague informs me that he regularly uses both Mutt and (a recent
version of, 3.1.4) KMail to access Maildirs on his local machine, and
maildir is now the default mailbox format for KMail.

http://docs.kde.org/en/3.1/kdenetwork/kmail/folders.html#folders-format

This will require the installation of, or an update to, KDE 3.1.4 of
course (however, once KDE 3.1.4 is installed, KMail can then be invoked
from any window manager currently running on the system).
