compiling mutt 1.5.4: doesn't find libiconv

Hi!
When I tried to configure mutt-1.5.4 it complained that it couldn't use
the installed iconv and suggested that I'd "Try using libiconv instead". I had
already installed libiconv. Is there a way to force the use of libiconv? Or is
there a way to replace iconv with libiconv?
My OS is Redhat 9, kernel 2.4.22, and Ahlon processor.
