--enable-pop support - required?

If I am using fetchmail/procmail/ssmtp, I am guessing there is no
requirement to have pop support enabled?

Mutt will read the ~/Mail/Inbox, and use sSMTP  to send messages (I am
not sure what happens when the SMTP server is unavailable ...).

So I am just looking for confirmation on this.
