Hello Andrew,

I was using mbox format too and I had the same Error. I use the 
nfs-user-server on my central File-Server (/home) and had to install 
the nfs-common Package (which contains the 'lockd') on my workstations. 

Because it gaved me too much trouble I was switching to maildir !!!

No locking problems anymore.
