I found that "L" works without "lists" or "subscribe" in .muttrc. When I use "L" the target address becomes "To: mutt-users@xxxxxxxx", amazing. What's the effect of "lists" and "subscribe" then? I noticed that after adding them, there will be a tag 'L' in front of all mails from mutt-users mail list.
lists and subscribe are for telling mutt what's a mailing list. Known lists are tagged with 'L', see $to_chars. You can post to mutt-users@ without these because mutt supports the List-Post: header containing the proper list mailing address. Rocco
