    Thanks: Both mails are well formed, and are displayed perfectly
here. This definitely designates the locale as suspect.

    What system do you run? Which libc version? What terminal? Could you
please run the following commands and report back their output? For the
last "printf", please also describe what you see on each line (correct
chars, parasite uppercase A with accent, other...).

| $ echo $LANG
| $ export LANG=en_NZ
| $ locale
| $ locale charmap
| $ locale -a | grep ^en_
| $ printf "L1: won\0264t \0250reply\0250\nU8: won\0302\0264t 
\0302\0250reply\0302\0250\n"
