Here: locale -a | grep fr_FR 

gives only fr_FR.utf8

I see that I have a problem; I will make a dpkg-reconfigure locales
and let you know if the problem disappears.

Just for your information my terminal is rxvt-unicode.

Please what do you call "suboptimal"? I have currently:

 send_charset="utf-8:iso-8859-15"

Don't laugh at me, if it is crazy ! What do you suggest?
