Thanks. I found the package and installed it. Then I started it from
the X-terminal $ prompt and I was able to figure out how to add my
maildirs. But I am not sure how to proceed from this point.

I assume that I need to enter the program in the "startup programs" of
the "desktop -> preferences -> sessions" menu.

I searched for documentation. I found the Debian man page and
the info version of the man page; but that was not much help to me.

I also found the XML document
"/usr/share/gnome/help/mail-notification/C/mail-notification.xml". At
first I assumed that I could read the document with Yelp, the Gnome
documentation browser and viewer. But none of the Yelp menus include
mail-notification, and the FILE menu of Yelp does not include an OPEN
item.
