 Some time ago, I picked up this macro somewhere:
 macro index \eR      ":source ~/.muttrc\n"

 It probably doesn't reset mutt to a totally initial state (but you
 don't want to lose your connections either, which might be part of
 that). It should solve your problem though, IMHO.
