I will definitely visit this issue before 1.6. My guess is that we'll
have to have a new config variable controlling whether or not to use
\recent, since it works better for some cases and worse for others. I
think we could avoid a lot of this by caching the unseen count in
hcache, but obviously that only works when hcache is on.
