I prefer when it counts up (well, in searches at least). But having the *estimated* remaining time would be fine.
The progress bar is (and has to be) written in a way which allows the total count to be optional, i.e. when you don't know (like when reading an mbox).
However, it should be pretty easy (once all the patches are committed) to write a patch which adds this info to progress_t and displays a remaining time counter if the total size is known.
