Thanks for the recommendation, but I'm aware of quilt (from following the Linux kernel discussions). Besides, I don't really see myself in that particular situation - I tend to copy the tree, develop or fix something, then either get it integrated or toss it. ;-) (The current patch I have for ClamAV is something of an exception, because I can't seem to subscribe to the fscking devel list...)
