This is because there is a main IMAPd which accepts connections, but after your connection is established the server forks. The copy of the imapd which is controlling your connection is not the same process which is accepting connections. When the imapd copy which is controlling your connection crashes, it affects nothing other than your current connection to the server. -- Derek D.
