I can't reproduce this without more information -- On a default installation
of mutt, z is bound to <next-page>. If i go to the last message of the index
and press it, i get a "You are on the last page message" and that's all that
happens. Pressing z a second time has the same result.

Also, what do you mean by 'z\r'? Whether i literally type z, then a
backslash, then r, or type z followed by a carriage return, i can't
get the behavior you describe.
