access mail on a remote pop server

I am trying to access mail on a remote pop server and it seems like a simple 
procedure:
type: c
pop://username@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/

it should ask me for a password, instead it is giving me message: is not a 
mailbox

I've tried issue command prior :set mbox_type=mbox
still the same message.
