You'll need the development bits too (/usr/include stuff etc) - those are often packaged separately. From the msmtp requirements page, it does require a SASL library for methods other than PLAIN, LOGIN and CRAM-MD5. If you haven't built it yourself, you might not notice. It might be worth adding native support for PLAIN - that's generally pretty easy.
