You should set LANG to the same encoding as your terminal.

In OSX's Terminal the setting is in Terminal, Window Settings, Display,
Character Set Encoding.  It should be set to UTF-8, which means that you
should use an UTF-8 encoding, such as LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8  Does it work?

Plain fi_FI uses one of the Western encodings (don't ask me which one)
but you can't use it or things will break when you browse OS X folders.

By the way, try out the real xterm (open X11), it's much faster.
