Two other reasons to do this in my mind are 1) If all messages are
stored in a database, three month old emails can be deleted willy
nilly. To view the old messages, I could just change to the
`archive/foo' mailbox for example. If I were to hack mutt to display
all mailbox messages in the archive directory by querying the DB and
displaying them in a normal manner, I would have a pretty nice
archival system, 2) the system administrators at my school don't
impose a quota on database size, but they do on file system usage.
So, I could store all the emails I wanted and never get bumped over
quota :-)
