Mutt hangs on return from sending mail

Over the weekend I upgraded mutt and postfix on my FreeBSD 5.2- RELEASE box. Now, when I use mutt to compose a new message, mutt will ask for the recipient, ask for the subject, and pass me to my editor (whatever editor I have specified). However, when I save and exit from the editor, mutt seems to hang. No crash, no error message, no forward progress (even if I let it run for half and hour or so). If I use mutt -x to send mail, mutt will ask for the recipient, ask for the subject, and allow me to type the message. However, when I am finished and I type the final "." to end the message, mutt hangs. In this case, the message is sent (I can see it happen if I tail my maillog in a second window), but mutt never returns me to the shell. If I use mutt to forward a message or bounce a message, I get a similar result. On a bounce, I can watch my maillog and see that the message was sent, but mutt hangs just after sending the message.

I have installed both Mutt 1.4 and Mutt 1.5.11 with the same results. So far, no matter which version and which configure options I use, the problem persists. This makes me think that the problem is environmental, and not a build problem.

I have boiled my .muttrc file down to nothing and built it back up line by line with no change in this behavior.

I have been through the release notes, and have had a look around the web for users with similar problems, but have not found a solution so far.

Has anyone seen this before? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Here is the output from mutt -v:
