So? What's problematical about that? The framebuffer console is very stable, gives you more columns if you want them, and IMO looks a lot nicer than a standard text console. The performance is also not noticably slower, at least on my hardware... I like to run my console at 1280x1024 (assuming the video hardware I have to play with supports it), giving 160 columns. If you happen to use an editor which does split windows, this gives you basically two full terminals on your console (minus one character for the divider). It's a really nice deal. All you need to do is add vga=775 to your kernel command line and reboot. No screwing around necessary...
