As Maildir needs more operations on the filesystem itself than mbox
(remember: Every message is its own file!), it is slower than mbox.
The advantage of maildir is that it can be cached efficiently (by
looking only at the directory, not into the file). This is not true with
mbox, because scanning mbox for changed entries means scanning through
the whole file. Obviously, this needs the same time as scanning it
without cache.

Spiro.
