This is exactly what I am thinking about.

I believe mutt config shoud draw heavily on the ideas of kernel config. I run
menuconfig, I read explanation of every options and I finally come up with a
config that is tailed for my needs. If I am lazy I can just run make defconf
to get a auto-generated config file with default options. How great that
would be if mutt could do the same!

I can't agree more with this. If there is such a tool, I believe quite a lot
of questions in this mailing list will be gone.

Correctly me if I am wrong, I think end users shouldn't waste time to learn
numerous options just to get a mail client running! As the function of kernel
is in the using, so should be mutt.

You may ask why not do it yourself after all this advocacy? Right now I have
no ability to do such a job but I believe this is the right way. If someone
start this project I will contribute what I can. Translate some material for
instance.
