setting variable to variable

Hi,

is it possible to set a variable to a variable value?  

e.g., I would like to have 2 macros add to and subtract from the
number of index lines displayed in pager view:

macro index <f2> "<enter-command> set pager_index_lines= pager_index_lines + 10 
 <enter>"  
macro index <f3> "<enter-command> set pager_index_lines=pager_index_lines - 10 
<enter>"

this of course does not work.  Is there no way to do this?
