If you're using Maildir, you'll get that; Maildir does not by default
need any number-of-lines header and doesn't store the messages all in one
file so that mutt has to go past each, so the data just isn't there.

This has come up a number of times before, and there is a procmail
recipe which will insert the number of lines in the header for mutt to
use.  Search the archives for something like

  maildir lines procmail

and see what you get.
